Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Registered Massage Therapy (RMT)?

Registered Massage Therapy, is a regulated healthcare profession that involves the assessment, treatment, and prevention of various musculoskeletal conditions and discomforts through hands-on techniques. Registered Massage Therapists are trained healthcare professionals who have completed rigorous education and are registered with the College Of Massage Therapists of Ontario.

2. What does a TMD/TMJD (Jaw) Massage include?

A jaw focused treatment includes a thorough assessment of your jaw, including listening to any popping or clicking, assessing jaw function and testing for movement and inflammation. After assessment, a treatment plan including home-care will be created to meet your specific needs, and treatment may include neck, shoulders, jaw, face, scalp and even intraoral treatment! Treatment times and focus can be adjusted at each visit, and reassessment will also be done on a regular basis to ensure we are meeting your goals!

Registered Massage Therapists can address a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to musculoskeletal pain, sports injuries, stress-related disorders, and chronic pain conditions. 4. Do I Need a Referral From a Physician to See an RMT?

In most cases, a referral is not required to see a Registered Massage Therapist. However, some insurance plans or healthcare providers may have specific requirements. I advise checking with your insurance company or primary care physician to determine if a referral is necessary.

5. What Should I Expect During an RMT Session?

During your initial session, your RMT will conduct a thorough assessment, including a discussion of your medical history and treatment goals. You will then be provided with privacy to disrobe to your comfort level and lie on a massage table. The therapist will use a variety of techniques tailored to your needs, ensuring your comfort and addressing any concerns you may have.

Many extended health insurance plans cover Registered Massage Therapy services. The extent of coverage can vary, so it's essential to check with your insurance provider to understand your specific plan details, including coverage limits and any required documentation.

7. How Do I Choose a Qualified RMT?

To ensure you receive quality care, look for a Registered Massage Therapist who is registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario on the Colleges website at www.cmto.com . These therapists have met stringent educational and professional standards. You can also seek referrals from healthcare professionals or friends who have had positive experiences.
